Dynamics can often be split between elliptic and hyperbolic behavior. I will present recent progresses on the hyperbolic side which have led to a deep understanding of smooth diffeomorphisms of compact surfaces with respect to their invariant measures with positive entropy, including some classification results. This is joint work with Sylvain Crovisier and Omri Sarig.
